WATERDEEP: Chapter Fifty Five

Krebbyg Masq’il’yr:

CHES 28th (The Claw of Sunsets – 1492 DR)

00:01 am

Alley searches the body of the Duergar Priest (Keeper of the Flame) whilst Zarek remains on the second Wagon looking out for Krebbyg Masq’il’yr.

Zarek looks about and assess the situation. The first Wagon cannot be moved as one of the Horses has been killed by the projectile fired at it by the Bregan D’aerthe Assassin, who is somewhere near and elevated so they can a larger area of vision. The Rogue recalls that the Drow race have a far greater range of Darkvision than his.

The rear Wagon, which he and the Bard are currently standing on, needs to be turned around as hey way back I the only way out from the Market Square. Both Alley and Zarek had picked-up some Animal Handling skills in the Filed Ward and they both were capable to perform the manoeuvre, even though it would be challenging.

Zarek turns full circle hoping that they only had one Bregan D’aerthe Assassin to deal with but Tymora reminded the Rogue that his wishes and dreams were not under his to control. It is at this point in the proceedings that the Rogue feels he is not alone as he ears the whispers of a female calling out his name and Zarek immediately knows it to be the Halfling Female Rogue called Daisy Shadowfoot.

Daisy Shadowfoot threatens Zarek and demands her ‘Bag of Holding’ to be returned to her. The Rogue is in no way a Fighter or military tactical expert, but he did know when they were both low on Magic and Health. Zarek realises that another fight with Daisy Shadowfoot may have the balance tip towards her.

Zarek stays put on the second Wagons seat and talks to Daisy Shadowfoot. The Rogue believing that he can come to some arrangement with Daisy Shadowfoot. However, he knows that he would lose the ‘Bag of Holding’ and also have to pay some other price for the incontinence.

Zarek: “No good Thief worth their salt would pass up the opportunity to do so and more.”

Alley: “Who’s Zarek talking to, its Daisy Shadowfoot. There is no way Zarek will give up our ‘Bag of Holding’ or a single Dragon either. Wait what did he just offer her?” Alley fear the worst but continues her task as silently as she can.

Daisy Shadowfoot: “Now where did that stuck up princess of a librarian disappear to?” Daisy muses as she scans the area for the Bard.

Alley had been out of Daisy Shadowfoot’s site and so turns ‘Invisible’, while hidden in the Wagon and then jumps out so she can continue to search the bodies of the Duergar Priest, 3 Duergar, Half-Ogre and Lucas ‘The Roach’. The body of Oli ‘The Actor’ was too far to risk approaching the Bregan D’aerthe Assassin.

Zarek: “I have the feeling I am missing something. No not something, but someone. She always travels with her bodyguard and partner in crime. That tall chap, Aranat she called him. I must say I feel sorry for the poor human used by Daisy Shadowfoot as a distraction, a facilitator for her performance and centre stage needs. Oh wait…” Realisation hits the Rogue and he promises not to put the Bard in harms way, unless she wants to that is.

Zarek realising that Daisy Shadowfoot does not travel alone, looks around and eventually spots her partner in crime, Aranat, hiding by the corner of a building and out of site of the Bregan D’aerthe Assassin.

Zarek is nearly able to agree on returning the ‘Bag of Holding’ to Daisy Shadowfoot and also offers her his ‘Chime of Opening’, hoping to tempt the Rogue with a valuable tool for their trade.

Zarek: “Vee can discuss zee ‘Bag of Holding’ at a meeting tomorrow at midday at Trollskull Manor face-to-face. I can give it back to you, but not yet for reasons I cannot explain here. The ‘Chime of Opening’ is also on zee table. You should also know zat there are many opportunities for you and your associate to earn vast sums of dragons if you are interested in taking on some new jobs.”

Daisy Shadowfoot is upset that he had taken it in the first place but is nearly persuaded in the return of her ‘Bag of Holding’ and as an apology and a sign of good faith, Zarek’s ‘Chime of Opening’.

Daisy Shadowfoot: “I think what you meant to say is you WILL give me back my ‘Bag of Holding’, you Will also give me your ‘Chime of Opening’ as compensation and I WILL also expect some financial recompense. The offer of further employment we can also discuss on completion or our beef.”

Daisy Shadowfoot climbs down from the rooftop with immense ease and at a great speed too. Zarek note that her climbing skills were superior to his and he could now see how easy it was for her to enter his room.

Zarek: “The strange thing was only a few personal items and toiletries were missing. She did not search anywhere else in Trollskull Manor?”

Aranat then glides past the Wagons as silent as a Thief, hidden by the building’s shadows as he makes his way past the Wagons and down a narrow alleyway.

Aranat then appears from an Alleyway driving a single horse and cart with Daisy Shadowfoot waving from the back of the cart at Zarek. The cart moves quickly as the Horse is made to dash onwards and in a matter of seconds it is gone, out of the range of the Bregan D’aerthe Assassin and Zarek’s sight.

Zarek: “A fast small cart, what a very clever idea.” Zarek seems to admire the Halfling Rogue, how bad can she really be?

Alley is not happy at what she has overheard, but cannot say anything, less she be discovered.

Alley: “Why is it that Zarek is blinded by a pretty face and is willing to think the best of them? The whole damsel in distress, I am not held back by social norms is so wet. Oh wait…” Alley thinks its best that she returns to her information gathering and gathering finances.

The Bregan D’aerthe assassin on the Tower roof, and whose name is Fel’rekt Lafeen, watches Zarek the Rogue as he stays seated on the second Wagon. Then eventually, having finished speaking to Daisy Shadowfoot, the Rogues is shot at by Krebbyg Masq’il’yr from a nearby tower rooftop as he spots the fleeing horse and cart carrying Daisy Shadowfoot the Rogue and Aranat the Fighter.

Zarek takes cover from the Lantanese Pistol attack and is unsure if he is being shot at or just being kept pinned down by Krebbyg Masq’il’yr.

Zarek feels that something is about to happen and that he defiantly will not run away and leave Alley all by herself this time or ever again, unless it is for tactical reasons.

The Rogue, knowing that Alley would complete her task as stated, attempts to play for time in order for the Bard to search all the bodies for clues, evidence and booty.

Zarek: “We either pay for Potions, Scrolls and Items, borrow them at a cost of a service from our Factions, gather them form fallen foes or steal to order from someone who we as not associated with. I feel the more we uncover the more we need to be well equipped. Maybe lighten our load or sell some unused Magic Items?”

The Rogue then spots a Drow Gunslinger, one of the Mates from the Sea Maidens Faire’s Ships harboured in Waterdeep Docks, moving out from in between the builds where Oli ‘The Actor’ lay dead on the cobbles.

Zarek then looks down and also spots the dead body of Lucas ‘The Roach’, along with the body of Oli ‘The Actor’, 2 more deaths associated with the Tiefling Rogue and this make him promise to himself to arrange, and pay for, the funeral cost of them both.

00:05 am

Zarek: “Drugs, just say no.”

The Drow Gunslinger then opens fires at the Rogue from the alleyway, hitting him in the thigh. The Rogue can see that these projectiles had been dipped in the Drow Poison which caused him intense pain and damage. A near perfect shot from the Drow Gunslinger and the cycle begins once more.

Luckily, the Rogues recent training allowed, him to roll with the shot and so lessen the severity. The shot was well placed and the Poison burned, but the Rogue got ready to engage with his attacker.

The Rogue, not wanting to directly engage with the Drow Gunslinger and fearing more shots from the Tower Rooftop, uses his trusty Hand-Crossbow and Magical ‘Walloping Bolt’, to fire at and so hit the Drow Gunslinger.

The Drow Gunslinger is caught off-guard by the Magical ‘Walloping Bolt’ and not only takes the damage from the bolt and the Rogue’s Sneak Attack ability, but he also falls to the ground prone from its Magical effect. This gives the Rogue the chance to attack him again with his Hand Cross-Bow, even though he was just out of comfortable range for the Rogue.

The unfortunate Drow Gunslinger then takes a second Cross-Bow Bolt from the Rogue and he is further blooded and damaged.

Zarek knows that, at range, he would be unable to attempt to subdue the Drow Gunslinger, as he was using his Hand Cross-Bow and not his Rapier, and would risk killing him would further anger Jarlaxle Baenre. A risk he was willing to take in order to provide Alley with more time to search the dead Xanathar Enforcers and Lucas ‘The Roach’. The Rogue remembering that the Drow were particularly hardy beings.

Zarek now can clearly see the Drow Assassin, Fel’rekt Lafeen, on the Tower Rooftop, standing on the edge and then watches him jump off. After some 20’ feet or so then Drow Assassin slowed down and drifted down to the ground behind one of the Filed Ward shacks and out of the Rogues sight. Fel’rekt Lafeen lands silently and moves stealthily towards his prize.

Zarek knows that, inherently, the Drow have access to certain Spells, just like he himself has, due to their race.

  • ‘Dancing Lights’
  • ‘Darkness’
  • ‘Faerie Fire’

However, the Drow used the ‘Feather Fall’ Spell just like Soluun Xibrindas employed a different ‘Levitate’ Spell on the ‘Scarlet Marpenoth’ submersible. This could mean that the Fel’rekt Lafeen on the Tower Rooftop was a member of the three Bregan D’aerthe, Fel’rekt Lafeen, who has access to a different Spell or a Magical Item like the ‘Feather Token’ carried sewn into the hem of their clothing by Alley and Zarek.

The Rogue figures that if he engages with the Drow Gunslinger, he could endeavour to capture him and do so before the Bregan D’aerthe operative, Fel’rekt Lafeen, arrives. Also knowing that they seem to be directly targeting him, he knew that he needed to be efficient and effective by using all of his skills to the maximum.

With the Drow Gunslinger still reeling from the Magical ‘Walloping Bolt’, the Rogue advances and attacks the raising Drow, using to his advantage the fact that he was still getting his bearings. There is still no sign of Fel’rekt Lafeen, the member of the Bregan D’aerthe, who was perched on the Tower rooftop.

Alley was concentrating on searching the bodies and failed to spot Fel’rekt Lafeen’s swan dive from the top of the Tower. She was however, finding many interesting things and useful too. Lucas ‘The Roach’ was carrying his own backpack that was full of travelling items, as if they were planning to leave Waterdeep seeing that they might have escaped from prison, and decided to deal with some unfinished business first. There was also a dusty sack which contained various items, that if Alley had to guess, was some form of stash containing Ill-Gotten Gains, Hot Items and by the smell of the sack, their secret, secret stash of Chimera.

Back at the action, the Rogue strikes the Drow Gunslinger for a third time but this time with his Rapier and Dagger, taking advantage of the Drow slowing getting to his feet and gathering his composure. Having struck the Drow Gunslinger and drawing more blood, the Rogue turns back, dashes away and out of the range of the Drow Gunslinger’s Shortsword.

His Rogue training allowing him to disengage from the duel and dash off. Not like previously, the Rogue moves out of the sight of the Drow Gunslinger, behind a Filed Ward Shack and back around on himself so he can come at the Drow Gunslinger from behind, see if he can spot Fel’rekt Lafeen and also draw him away from Alley and her Investigations.

Zarek: “This is better, using my movement allows me to draw people to or from somewhere, great to moving close to Alley, if she would just speed up a bit too as she has been sluggish this night.”

As the Rogue moves away, he can hear the sound of the Drow Gunslinger following him. He roughly calculates that the Bard is due finished her searching and would therefore be able to enter the battle. So, the Rogue continues to dash past the Wagons, and around one of the shacks, hoping to catch the Drow unawares as planed and close enough to the Bard to allow him to use his Roguish Sneak Attack.

00:09 am

The Bard becomes visible, by the first Wagon and attacks the Drow Gunslinger that is following after the Rogue. Alley can also clearly see that it was one of the Bregan D’aerthe who they saw speaking to Laeral Silverhand. Krebbyg Masq’il’yr is presumably second in command after Fel’rekt Lafeen and with Soluun Xibrindas being the crazy Theater Elf killer and imprisoner of abandoned Estran Icehorn.

Alley: “Dear God, Tymora take our luck for overlooking Estran Icehorn. I guess we have unfinished business with the Sea Maiden Faire and not just regarding the ‘Stone of Golorr.”

The Drow Gunslinger then choses to confront the Bard, who had evoked her Bardic Inspiration upon herself by reminding herself that she could achieve anything given the time and a good friend to help with the task.

Alley: “You’re no longer the awkward girl that was constantly reminded that her poor father was in a better place and with her looks she should easily find a suitor, one of the many young Lords would be most beneficial. You are an adventurer now and have Waterdavians to protect.”

With shortsword in one hand, and attacking twice with said weapon, the Drow Gunslinger held a shield in the other. The Drow made Studded Leather Armour, Shield and Shortsword all look like they had been specifically designed for the darkness.

Zarek ‘The Sage’: “That should be the Underdark to be precise, as that is where these being originate from. Fascinating the workmanship is functional yet it has its beauty too.” The Rogue ponders as he is suddenly jolted back to the present when he spots another enter the Market Square.

Krebbyg Masq’il’yr has his Lantanese Pistol drawn, looks upon the panorama before him and elects to fire at the Bard.

The Bard suffers a slash from the Drow Gunslinger Shortsword, and as she was now visible, a bullet shot from the Lantanese Pistol of Krebbyg Masq’il’yr. Alley is assailed on all sides by the Drow as they attempt to snuff out the Magical treat that she possesses.

It was at this point that the Rogue dashes around from behind the shack and does battle with Krebbyg Masq’il’yr, who is standing at the edge of the Market Square. Zarek hopes that he could reduce the harm caused by Krebbyg Masq’il’yr and allow the Bard to finish dealing with the Drow Gunslinger. In turn she would then be free to aid him in dispatching the Bregan D’aerthe lieutenant, Krebbyg Masq’il’yr.

Truly a brave young Tiefling indeed, as the Rogue had discovered that the Drow Gunslinger, in particular, was very tough indeed, despite his slim and sinewy figure.

The Drow Gunslinger is quickly finished off by Alley, after all the initial work done by the Rogue, and his body left laying among the Xanathar Enforcers so as to leave a distinct trail to the Sea Maidens Faire obvious enough for the Waterdeep authorities to find. Not to mention the Xanathar Guild also being involved and hopefully detracting any interest in their direction.

Hoping that it does not interfere with Laurel Silverhand’s dealings with Jarlaxle Baenre of the Sea Maidens Faire.

The Bard is now intent of aiding young Zarek, knowing that Krebbyg Masq’il’yr must be a very proficient and swift Sword Master indeed.

Then the Bregan D’aerthe lieutenant reminded her of Soluun Xibrindas and so lead her guilty conscience back to the Luskan Bounty Hunter named Estran Icehorn.

Alley: “They have one of ours and so we take one of theirs.”

The Bard, feeling that this Drow was the last enemy standing and doing her best to capture the member of Bregan D’aerthe who is named Krebbyg Masq’il’yr. That way they now had something to trade with Zardoz Zord, or the real leader of the Sea Maidens Faire, Jarlaxle Baenre.

Alley believes that they can use the Bregan D’aerthe lieutenant, Krebbyg Masq’il’yr, to trade for Estran Icehorn. Or they could interrogate Krebbyg Masq’il’yr to seek more information regarding:

  • The Drows part in the Grand Game
  • Information on Zardoz Zord and Jarlaxle Baenre
  • Estran Icehorn location and condition
  • Information regarding the three eyes of the ‘Stone of Golorr’
  • Have the Bard pretend to be Krebbyg Masq’il’yr

The exchange between Alley, Zarek and Krebbyg Masq’il’yr is hard fought. However, the Heroes of the Field Ward are victorious and Alley remembers to knock Krebbyg Masq’il’yr unconscious so as not to expire their line of enquiry.

The Bard then takes command of the situation, asks the Rogue to deposited the body of Krebbyg Masq’il’yr into the back of the Wagon whilst she herself endeavoured to turn the Wagon around so they can head back towards the North Ward with Krebbyg Masq’il’yr and all the items recovered from the Xanathar Enforcers and Lucas ‘The Roach’.

The Bard is able to urge both horses to follow her commands as if she had been a Teamster all her life.

The Rogue, inspired by her actions, filled with adrenalin having battled Krebbyg Masq’il’yr and not wanting to be outdone by Alley, also performs a miraculous feat in lifting the Drow with ease into the back of the Wagon and then jumping in himself with the grace and ease of an acrobat from the Sea Maidens Faire.

The Rogue then kneels down and proceeds to tie the hands and feet of Krebbyg Masq’il’yr, also making sure to gag him too. The first attempt to tie-up the Drow is awful and Zarek tries again, remembering the last time he did the same action and the prisoner escaped.

The Bard meanwhile, sounds like a male human as she alerts every one of their coming and also warns that there is a fight behind them. The Bard, once again, is able to perform her misdirection exceptionally well so that all eyes are drawn away from the Wagon and onto the scene of the ambush.

The Rogue is so impressed that his second attempt at securing the hands and feet of Krebbyg Masq’il’yr would in no way be allowed if seen by his old mentor Iomhar Rackham. The second try is not Zarek’s best piece of work.

Zarek stays hidden in the back of the Wagon, having covered the unconscious Krebbyg Masq’il’yr and himself under the canvas. The Rogue is then able to searches Krebbyg Masq’il’yr as they travel out of the Field Ward and he removes anything that he thinks may be Magical and aid Krebbyg Masq’il’yr in an escape or attack.

The Rogue can also see a backpack filled with items recovered by Alley.

Krebbyg Masq’il’yr:

  • Drow Black Studded Leather Armour
  • Drow Shield
  • Drow Shortsword
  • Lantanese Pistol – 3 smoke Packets – 14 bullets
  • Coin Pouch (Personal)
  • Coin Pouch with a Note attached

Duergar Priest – Keeper of the Flame:

  • Coin Pouch
  • Scroll Case

3 Duergar:

  • 3 Coin Pouches

Half-Ogre:

  • A Sack containing various dusty items and Weapons.
  • Coin Pouch

00:10 am

The Rogue realises that the Bard had demanded that he collect Krebbyg Masq’il’yr so they could interrogate him or use him for a bargaining chip or as exchange.

Zarek: “Not sure how or when I will find the time but I make a promise to personally arrange for the burial of Lucas ‘The Roach’ and Oli ‘The Actor’. Two hapless victims of circumstances and the evils of drugs.” The Rogue thinks to himself.
