Trollskull Alley Fireball:
CHES 16th (THE CLAW OF SUNSETS)
Our two Heroes know nothing of the ‘Trollskull Alley Fireball’ which will change their lives forever and cause them to lose a close friend as they continue Zarek’s Gray Hand mission.
Alley and Zarek head back down to the outpost intent on questioning Captain Terrik and Alf, the false Waterdeep City Guard, who are in fact working for the Zhentarim Faction.
Alley and Zarek find that Captain Terrik and Alf are still tied-up though they heard them trying to escape their bonds as they arrived at the outpost. Zarek wastes no time and uses his Spell ‘Thaumaturgy’ to alter the appearance of his eyes and make them glow red.
The Rogue threatens the two Zhentarim members with violence if they do not disclose their reason for being here on Mount Waterdeep.
Captain Terrik has been an operative for too long to be intimidated by the Tiefling child, knowing that one who does violence dose not threaten it they just carry it out, and so fears they for whom he works more. However, this is not the case for Alf.
Alf: “I will tell you what you want to know just let me go free.”
Alley: That sounds like a deal we can take.”
Captain Terrik: “Be quite you fool, not only do you know nothing but you and your family and friends will suffer if you do say anything, mark my words.”
Zarek still believes that he can extract the information form Captain Terrik, but the veteran just warns the forces that Zarek is messing with will not forget and they will find him and his girlfriend.
Zarek realises that Alley’s kinder ways may work better and takes Captain Terrik outside, making sure that he pushes down on a wound or two to make Alf’s situation appear more dire.
Then Alley plays the good City Watch guard as Zarek convincingly plays the bad City Watch guard. Alf divulges the following information:
- They received their orders from Yellowspire a week ago, via one of his Black Flying Snakes. They don’t know where Yellowspire is in Waterdeep.
- They trekked up the mountain under cover of darkness, and, with the Manticore’s aid, took the guards posted here by surprise.
- Five of the City Guards are buried in shallow graves out back, while the Manticore took the last one to its lair.
- They haven’t spoken to or seen the old Monk Hlam.
- They’re supposed to stay here until they receive new orders.
Alley cuts Alf’s bonds and they agree to give him a 45 minutes head-start.
Alley: “I always keep a promise.”
Zarek somehow fells Alley’s words to be very ominous.
Alley and Zarek head back down to Waterdeep with Captain Terrik, having removed his Weapons, Armour and Livery so as not to dishonour the deaths of the City Guards. The trek back down Mount Waterdeep takes only a few hours and is made without the need for any further rest and without running into obstacles.
Alley and Zarek head to the Watching Tower, in the west of Waterdeep and hand Captain Terrik over to the City Guard there. The relay the events of their travels to the Outpost and the loss of the 6 City Guards at the hand of Terrik and his men.
Zarek happily explains what Terrik is facing as he leaves.
Zarek: “By my reconning you face the flowing charges. Assaulting or impersonating an official is rewarded with a Flogging & Imprisonment, but you have Murdered an official and for that you win Death, congratulations.”
When the Alley and Zarek reconvene with Vajra Safahr at Blackstaff Tower, she asks them for Hlam’s warning. Zarek tells her about their ordeals on the way, the Blackstaff ensures them that she’ll have a patrol send up there as soon as possible, and then she is very impressed that Zarek had already managed the situation with the City Guard, even having a Griffin Rider fly to the outpost to secure the bodies.
Zarek tells Vajra Safahr of the prophecy told by Hlam on Mount Waterdeep:
Hlam: “Evil’s twin hides its face for now. Expect that to change before spring’s end”
Hlam: “Innocents will die on the Founder’s Day. A deal is signed, Death shall come regardless.”
Hlam: “Wolves stalk their prey from several sides”
Hlam: “The Twin, the Fiend, the Rogue, the Unhinged that hides shall bring war to the town of waters deep”
Vajra Safahr Magically make a Black Leather-bound Book appears and she make a Magical Script appear on his pages as the Rogue recounts their mission. Zarek make a point of studying the books appearance.
Vajra Safahr then becomes distracted and is obviously pondering the meaning.
Zarek: “I am not sure what he is referring to but I think that….”
Vajra Safahr: You have not been tasked to think about this young Brightlamp, your work, though very well completed, is done. I thank you.”
The door then opens and Vajra Safahr’s assistant appears opening the door ready to escort the two Heroes out of Blackstaff Tower.
Alley: “Small cog remember”, Alley whispers to Zarek.
The assistant wishes them both a good day using their name and they realise that they have found new allies, but also have entered into the affairs of Waterdeep.
Vajra Safahr knows that within a day or two, she’ll also have learned exactly how the Tiefling, Zarek Brightlamp, conducted himself with the Monk Hlam, and what, if anything, the old Monk has to say about him. Zarek, now being a full member of the Gray Hands, gains 1 renown.

Once back at Trollskull Manor, Alley and Zarek find Iomhar sleeping at one of the tables, surrounded by food and drinks.
Zarek attempts to catch out his mentor but the cleaver Master Rogue had placed wires and bells about his table, knowing the Apprentice will always want to prove his worth.
The three friends eat, drink and chat for a while and Alley and Zarek feel that this was not just a passing visit. However, the Master Rogue is too skilled at keeping a Poker Face that they are unsure as to his real reason for visiting. During their conversation they realise that Zarek had not taken into account the Invitations and Security for Trollskull Manor and over the next couple of days the Rogue manages both.
For Security he offers Iomhar the job and h agree. Alley offers to pay for their attire as they need to be on their best behavior and smart, so as not to scare the locals.
Iomhar: “Your wit is exceptional Alley; be careful no one steals it from you.”
CHES 17th (THE CLAW OF SUNSETS)
The Fireball:
Zarek is able to haggle the invitations at a very reasonable price at such short notice and deliver included as well once he explains the amount of extra work, they will generate given the importance of the Grand Opening.
Nat, Jenks and Squiddly visit Trollskull Manor. Squiddly is wanting to continue helping Alley and Zarek with their Magical Book cataloguing, Nat just spends her time taking everything in, her eye always scanning the room and Squiddly asks a lot of questions of the Rogue.
Squiddly: “Where were you yesterday for, we sailed in and you were not here?
Zarek: “We were busy and away from Trollskull Manor.” Zarek feels that Squiddly asked questions that were more than just normal conversation, but he knew what it was like to be a child once.
The day before the Grand Opening, Alley, Zarek and their staff were preparing and making last minute alterations for the Grand Opening the flowing day. Dress rehearsals for the Raffle, new dishes are tasted and everything is left spotless.
CHES 18th (THE CLAW OF SUNSETS)
This day saw a visit in the evening from Volo, Renaer Neverember and Floon Blagmaar.
Volo checks how things for his signing are coming along and he also mentions that he has taken the liberty of providing Music and entertainment.
Volo: “And all at a small cost to yourselves.”
Renaer Neverember: “Volo don’t you remember the favour that they did for you and even now your fame will be spread with their help.”
Volo: “but I… Never mind you are right as even Renaer.”
Renaer also takes the opportunity to discuss his offer of partnership, offering 500 Gold Dragons for 10%. Zarek agrees and as if by Magic, Alley appears counter-offering with 5% stake for 500 Gold Dragons. Renaer does not flinch and agrees without a second thought and a bit too eagerly as well.
CHES 19th (THE CLAW OF SUNSETS)
Grand Opening:
Iomhar brings 5 other bouncers with him to provide security and they go about the place making sure they familiarising themselves with Trollskull Manor.
The Urchins, Zarek having Offed them a job, are keeping a lookout around Trollskull Manor. Nat, Jenks and Squiddly are given a hearty breakfast and spend the day watching out for any suspicious characters. The character negotiated a 2 Gold Dragon each payment.
Alley and Zarek split the day into 3 shifts with the local traders, local residents and religious figures invited for the early part of the Grand Opening. Here the two Heroes served Teas, Cakes and Sandwiches which was a Grand success. invitees included Broxley Fairkettle, Hargadon Dudley, Kylynne Silmerhelve and Cassia Yaeldrin Alleys mother.
Hargadon Dudley thanked Zarek personally and said he was at his service when needed.
Next, the workers of Waterdeep arrive after the staff have a short break.
The Guild Members, and friends from the Fieldward arrive and they are severed with tasters of meals to be offer at Trollskull Manor in the coming months. They also have a fine selection of Ales, Wines and Liquors.
The guests are highly entertained, fed and watered. The music and entertainment provided by Mattrim Threestrings and accompanied by two male musicians and a female singer.
More tables are needed to be laid on the first floor as the guests spill throughout Trollskull Manor.
Jalester Silvermane make an appearance and once again inquires if the two heroes were interested in joining the Lords Alliance and when they had told him that they were otherwise engaged, turned to enjoying his evening off. Bonnie, the Barmaid from the Yawning Portal,
Alasha Gaige is one of the first to arrive during the evening’s festivities, possibly to help hide her pail completion, and keen to find new business partners. Zarek remembering that she hides her true class of her speech and believes Alasha Gaige once came from money.
Obaya Uday, Meloon Wardragon and Durnan also arrive, with Durnan only making a brief appearance but saying that he was very grateful for inviting him.
This is when Zarek remembers that he had heard of the name Meloon Wardragon, as it was mentioned in Alexander Brightlamp’s Journal. Meloon Wardragon appears to be a member of Renaer Neverember’s old friends.
Volothamp Geddarm is a roaring success and is convinced to read passages from his forthcoming book, Volo’s Guide to Spirits and Spectres. He also brings critics who he purposefully pointed out to the staff prior to them being seated, and they appear to have a wonderful evening.
The bottle of wine, Whirling Wind Calimshan Red, was raffled with the proceeds of 1000 Gold Dragons going to the Fieldward Chimera fund and half to the Orphans of Waterdeep charity, a last-minute addition by Alley.
Zarek laments the money lost from his bottle of Wine but recalls fondly the sharing of the bottle that they had with Iomhar.
Renaer Neverember appears with a few of his friends and later on during the evening makes a point of introducing them and other friends that arrive throughout the night. From then on, the evening becomes filled will mirth, music and revelry.
The only trouble that evening was two Halflings and a Half-Elf who attempted to join the entertainments without a proper invitation.
Iomhar: “I don’t care if your names are Lofty, Astrid and Galdor the famous three, you’re not getting in.”
Even Emmek Frewn turned up with two male friends and Zarek was surprised and asked Iomhar to keep an eye on him.
Later on, that night there was a complaint from Emmek Frewn’s table and one of his guests wanted to return the food as there were Rat Dropping in it. At first Emmek Frewn tried to make a fuss but Zarek intervened quickly.
The Trollskull Manor Barmaid, Ryba, asked Zarek what she should do and he told her to take it away and bring them some new food.
Emmek Frewn: “I don’t think we should, do you? Considering the state of this food and we have even run-up a large bar tab. I think it would be best that that was taken care of, don’t you?”
Zarek was sure he was being scammed but was not sure how or why.
Zarek: “Err, I will need to check on this for you Emmek.”
Emmek Frewn: “Me and my guests don’t have time for that, sort the tab and we will not raise our voices and spoil your evening.”
Zarek reluctantly agrees and goes off to the Kitchens to inspect the food. However, when he questions Ryba she had already disposed of the food.
Zarek studies Renaer Neverember’s friends as he meets them and get the impression that they have worked together as they were familiar with each other more than if they were just acquaintances.
Vajra Safahr (The Blackstaff) was there and stayed for only a short time. Laraelra “Elra” Harsard, Osco Salibuck, Lord Torlyn Wands, Osco Salibuck, Eiruk Weskur, Harug Shieldsunder, Parlek Lateriff and Meloon Wardragon were all at one point together and/or with Renaer Neverember.
During the nights events Zarek and alley were introduced to Renaer Neverember friends and they pick-up the following information. All of these friends may be a great connection for various lines of information or help in the future.
Laraelra “Elra” Harsard: A Female Human Sorceress with sharp, strong cheekbones along with long black hair frame a pale face. She dresses practically, usually wearing a heavy woollen cloak covering an oiled leather tunic, pants, and sealskin boots.
Observations: She spent most of her time near to, or next to, Renaer Neverember. She is also Vajra Safahr’s right-hand woman in running Force Grey.
Lord Torlyn Wands: Hair and Beard: Mahogany-coloured hair and a full beard. Prefers silk shirts, often unbuttoned enough to show the top of his chest hair. He’s succumbed to modern Waterdhavian court fashion but insists on wearing practical, waterproofed boots. Has a small amount of middle-aged padding around his stomach.
Observations: He is a passionate bibliophile; he is eager to discuss his recent acquisitions and any titles he is searching for.
Osco Salibuck: A Halfling Lightfoot Male with curly, chestnut-brown hair and long sideburns. He wears silver rings in his left ear and nostril.
Observations: He has just returned from an expedition to the Tomb of Galari, an Archmage of Ancient Netheril. Grandson of Madrak Salibuck (Renaer Neverember’s butler).
Eiruk Weskur: A handsome young Human Wizard whose hawknose juts out from between hollow cheeks. He has tightly curled black hair and wears black robes stitched with arcane patterns of silver thread.
Observations: He became friends with Vajra Safahr during the brief period during which she was a member of the Watchful Order and before she was apprenticed to Samarck the Blackstaff. Knows Bowgentra Summertaen, Lady Master of the Watchful Order.
Harug Shieldsunder: Harug is old. His face is craggy even for a Male Dwarf’s. His features look like melted candlewax roughly hewn with a sharp stone.
Observations: Harug was a tunnel worker for the Cellarers’ & Plumbers’ Guild. In that work he became friends with Laraelra, who was the daughter of Malaerigo Harsard, the Guildmaster of the Cellarers’ & Plumbers’ Guild of Waterdeep.
Parlek Lateriff: Older Male Human with a close-cropped grey beard, wearing spectacles near the end of his long nose.
Observations: He framed his conversation by either referring to obscure tomes or by revealing a canny understanding of Waterdeep’s street-lore, the separation of what’s being gossiped on the street from why it’s being gossiped about. Parlek is also currently seeking Rare Books.
Meloon Wardragon: Meloon Wardragon was once a northern barbarian in all his glory – tousled blond locks, glistening muscles. Now closer to forty than thirty, he cuts his hair short and has a beard that tends more toward scruff than not. Strapped to his side is a Battleaxe forged from silver, electrum, and steel, with a handle wrapped in blue dragon hide, and a star sapphire set into its pommel.
Observations: Three weeks ago, he accompanied a fledgling band of adventurers on an expedition into Undermountain. Keeps a room at the Yawning Portal. The evening was a great success and the future of Trollskull Manor looks bright.
CHES 19th (THE CLAW OF SUNSETS)
The Fireball In Trollskull Alley:
Alley and Zarek are having breakfast in the Taproom of Trollskull manor when their lives take a turn for the worse.
Windows rattle as the roar of an explosion fills Trollskull Alley. Charred bodies and anguished screams fly through the air. A thick cloud of acrid smoke billows outward from the blast, which seems to have occurred right outside your door.
Zarek rushes to one of the shattered windows and looks out, while Alley calls for the staff to grab clean tablecloths and water.
Zarek can see about a dozen bodies lying by the southern entrance to Trollskull Alley, two buildings west of Fala Lefaliir’s establishment, Corellon’s Crown and opposite the Tiger’s Eye, the office of Vincent Trench.
Zarek can see Fala Lefaliir’s on the balcony of Corellon’s Crown and he shouts out to her.
Zarek: “Bring some Potions of Healing as quick as you can.”
Fala Lefaliir’s dashes into the Corellon’s Crown.
Zarek attempted to ascertain what could have caused the explosion and to see if he might also be able to spot the perpetrator, if any.
Zarek: “The scorched area is approximately a 20’ foot radius, I am sure that I also heard a low roar before the bright flaming light and finally, there are a few loose items on fire that, presumably were not in the possession of the victims. This has all the hallmarks of a ‘Fireball’.”
In the wake of the explosion, people emerge from their houses and shops to survey the devastation. The ‘Fireball’ didn’t set any buildings ablaze, but it left twelve people dead.
Zarek rushes over to check for any signs of life, fully knowing that normal citizen of Waterdeep were not hardy enough to have survived the damage inflicted by a ‘Fireball’ of this intensity.
Alley and Zarek know that they can help the victims and that the City Watch were sure to arrive soon.
Zarek checks for signs of life on the first body:
- 1 Male Gnome wearing a burned Cloak and clutching a Dagger.
- 2 Cloaked Male Humans (Zhentarim Sellswords) clad in black Leather Armour with sheathed Longswords.
Zarek also finds, whilst looking for a pulse, that they both have the Black Flying Snake Tattoos of the Zhentarim.
The dead Gnome has dry waste on his boots and cloak, suggesting he has spent time in the Waterdeep sewers recently. He also has a Pouch.
Zarek takes a suspicious look about to see who was still in the area as they are witnesses to be questioned and then the Rogue in the Tiefling felt it would be important to secure whatever was in the Pouch for evidence as it was sure to be important.
There is a small crowd to the west of the Alley and Zarek also spots Emmek Frewn, with some of his staff. There is also a well dress Lady by the door of ‘The Tiger’s Eye’, run by Vincent Trench of course.
Zarek to this day is not sure how he made such a mess of what should have been the easiest Picking-Of-Pockets a Rogue could ever want to attempt.
Zarek: “The mark is dead and not even moving, this would kill Iomhar if he was here.”
It might have been that he was out of practice and could not even remember the last time he attempted it, or that he did not remember to visit Tymora’s Temple and toss a coin in her palm or was it just always meant to happen. Zarek looks up and meets the gaze of the Lady by the door of ‘The Tiger’s Eye’.
Zarek: “No time to deal with her now, I need to continue helping the victims.”
Alley was now also at the scene and she began to check the victims for signs of life.
- 2 Female Humans and 1 Male Half-Elf dressed in plain clothes.
- 1 Elderly Female Human in fine clothes.
Alley can tell from their clothes, and shopping bags and items, that they must be all staff of wealthy North Ward families, tragically killed while running errands.
The woman is not familiar to the Bard and carries nothing and so she may have been local or out for a stroll.
Zarek moves to the next set of bodies, the smells of roasting flesh entering his nose and mouth.
- 2 Female Halflings who were playing, what looks like, a Flute and a Fiddle, and 2 Male Halflings may have been dancing.
- Iomhar Rackham, Iomhar being of average height with a malnourished but sturdy build, he is very young among other Half-Elves, his tattered black traveller’s clothes and a boot-length charcoal cloak, now charred and smouldering.
Zarek was saddened by the loss of all beings, but the sight of the young Halflings sees itself into his mind, what needless deaths.
Then he is sicked to the stomach as he turns over the Male body and discovers to his horror that he at first recognises the attire worn, but he can’t believe it true.
Zarek: “It can’t be Iomhar, we were together just the other day.”
However, on further inspection, the Rogues feels are confirmed when he recognises the blade, as his facial features are too burnt to be sure.
Alley: “Zarek, this one is still alive and breathing, hurry give me a hand.”
While the staff from Trollskull Manor could only cover the bodies of the vitrines, they did that using table cloths from the premises. Other on-lookers all appeared to be too stunned to react.
Zarek didn’t even have time to morn his Mentor and Friend.
Zarek: “Someone will pay for this. This I swear by Tymora herself.”
Alley had propped up a Male Human and Zarek could see that his face was badly burnt.
- 1 Large, Heavyset Male Human in his forties with short-cropped black hair and pale skin. A defining feature is that half of his face is badly burned. HE IS STILL ALIVE.
Alley, checks his injuries while Zarek questions the survivor, knowing full well that they now only had a limited time to investigate the scene before they would be asked to leave by the City Guard, or City Watch. They might be lucky as they are both members of the Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors. But they will also be witnesses and may not be allowed to be involved any further than they are right now.
Zarek: “Do you know where you are, what’s your name?”
The survivor looks dazed and confused, but not under any danger of expiring.
Urstul Floxin: “My name, its Urstul Floxin.”
Alley: “Lucy, Thirteen.”
Zarek: “Not now Alley, what happened?”
Urstul Floxin: “There was just a bright light and a lot of heat and he’s pretty sure he was knocked out.”
Alley: “What were you doing in Trollskull Alley Urstul?”
He claims to have come to Trollskull Alley in order to go to, he glances around and points at a storefront, the Book Wyrm’s Treasure. He doesn’t know what happened.
Alley looks as she does when she attempts to decern the truth for someone and that was the Rogues cue to do the same. Alley must have missed his hesitation, or mis-direction, and the Rogue could tell that Urstul Floxin was not being forthright will of the truth or knowledge that he had.
Zarek: “Are you sure there was nothing else, anything not matter how small or strange?”
Urstul Floxin appeared to be getting agitated or nervous.
Urstul Floxin: “Look, I must have been hallucinating. But just after the explosion, I could have sworn I saw a ‘Mechanical Angel of Death’ moving among the bodies. I thought he was going to come for me next, but then it turned and ran away.”
Alley is happy that Urstul Floxin was fine to be left while they continued to search for clues and question the witnesses before they are stopped by the authorities.
Zarek, now looking for further clues as to the Assassin, hears a muffled sobbing and looks to see a water barrel, by the corner building by the south entrance, and discovers a small male human child, crying into his sleeve.
Zarek stands up and calls out.
Zarek: “Alley, I think it best you talk to him.”
Alley smiles and rushes over to talk with the boy. Alley knees down and is face to face with the boy.
Alley: “Hello there my name is Alley and I am here to help. Don’t be scared this is Zarek and he will scare anything bad away. Isn’t that right Zarek”
Zarek: “Oh yes indeed, we are here to protect you from all harm. What’s your name?”
Alley smiles again as she can see that Zarek is more confutable with children now. Zarek spots that one of his arms is wet and he is keeping it behind his back. Zarek also spots a small puddle of water by Martem Trec’s feet.
The boy tells the two Heroes his name, Martem Trec, and goes on to tell his terrible tale.
This 12-year-old boy watched as his Halfling friends perished in the flames. He didn’t see much beyond that, but he found something important after the blast went off.
Zarek: “What do you have behind your back Martem Trec?”
Trec Martem produces a necklace, which Zarek immediately identifies as a ‘Necklace of Fireballs’, with two beads remaining and a broken clasp. He doesn’t know what to make of this object but was planning to keep it.
Alley looks at the Rogue and can see that ‘Rogue Gleam’ that he sometimes gets.
Alley uses here ‘Message’ Spell so no one can hear.
Alley: “Zarek, you do know that people who withhold the evidence, the necklace for example, and knowledge of it, from the City Watch are guilty of a crime in Waterdeep. Hampering justice by concealing evidence can result in a fine of up to 200 gp and hard labour for up to a Tenday.”
Zarek: “I also have the pouch off the Gnome too, I know that it is important.”
Alley thinks Zarek will need to make sure he is as charming as possible to get out of this one. Still, he has a few friends in jail to keep him company.
All we have is more questions Alley thinks to herself.
- Who was the target of the ‘Fireball’?
- Where was the Assassin situated?
- Where did the Assassin go?
- Who were victims and who were innocents is this horrific attack?
- What was Iomhar doing here and was he involved?
- What was the Zhentarim’s part in all this?
- The Gnome has an important part to play, I am sure of that, but what?
- Where did the Gnome come from to have had sewage on his Boots and Cloak?
- Did anyone see anything and if so which of them did?
What will Zarek do not to be arrest for stealing from the dead and from a small boy?
